Core Theme 3

Build valuable relationships … within Highline College’s communities

Recently, the college’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs have been especially active in teaming up with student, community, and professional groups beyond the campus to showcase STEM opportunities and inspire learners. A few examples:

  • Held on our campus March 26, Highline School District’s STEM Fest was designed to motivate girls who might be self-identifying, transgender, or non-binary about opportunities in STEM. Highline and Green River College’s MESA programs provided 20 female mentors to shadow, answer questions, and lead students in activities and challenges.
  • March 22–24 marked the 12th year of the Pacific Rim Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (PRCCDC) and its 10th anniversary at Highline College. Seventeen teams participated, with daily attendance averaging 230. Sponsors included Raytheon, the National Security Agency, Boeing, the Air Force Civilian Service, and UW-Bothell.
  • Seven faculty/staff attended the national STEM Core convening at Stanford University March 7–8. Highline is one of only four Washington colleges participating in STEM Core, a $10 million National Science Foundation project to provide mentoring and professional internships for non-traditional STEM learners.
  • Highline hosted its fifteenth Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Dinner March 6. About 60 students took the opportunity to dine with 30 mentors from faculty and industry.
  • Highline hosted the 13th annual Western Washington Community College Student Math Conference February 23. Retiree Ed Morris provided a keynote address. Well over 100 attended and about 25 students presented from around a dozen colleges.

Faculty and Staff Honorees

  • Rob Droessler (ceramics) held a gallery show at the Core Gallery in Seattle in February.
  • Ben Thomas (music) composed a new suite for a multi-media project, “Submergence,” by choreographer Juliet McMains. The performance premiered at UW’s Meany Hall in January.
  • Mutallip Anwar (English) presented at the Praxis Conference at UW in February on anti-racist pedagogy.
  • On March 1, Susan Rich (English) presented as a guest to the “Crannog Journal” in Galway. Her poem “Clocks are Made of Foxes” was published in the journal’s 50th anniversary issue.
