Area Report for Board of Trustees

Vice President for Administration

  • The graduating class of 2018 celebrated their accomplishments on June 14th at ShoWare Center in Kent. It was the largest commencement ceremony in Highline history with 661 graduates walking across the stage. I would like to give a big shout out to all of the employees who had worked tirelessly behind the scene to provide support for all of our students on commencement day.
  • As part of my interim assignment as administrator-in-charge for the International Student Programs, we will be looking to re-organize the department temporarily due to the departures of two key employees. Mariko Fujiwara, Director, will be leaving Highline College after 21 years of service. Yang Suttell, Admission Coordinator, will also be leaving the department after four years in the position.

Finance & Budget

  • The Executive Staff has tentatively agreed on a proposed budget for the fiscal year 2018-2019. The Budget Office will be preparing the budget proposal for submission to the Board in the September meeting.

Public Safety

  • David Menke attended the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) annual conference in Orlando, Florida in late June. The conference included a seminar on the emergency responses to the Pulse Club shooting, as well as an actual site visit to the Pulse Club.

Facilities

  • Demolition is underway in Building 26 – Health & Life Sciences renovation project and is expected to continue through the summer. At this time, mechanical, electrical and plumbing installation is scheduled to begin in the fall.
  • We are in the design phase of the Building 6 Plaza Canopy project. Construction and installation are expected for January 2019.
  • Summer repair projects are underway, including roof work on Building 2 and 27.
  • After 21 years of hard work on the grounds team in rain, snow, and sunshine, Joel McClusky has decided to leave Highline for another employment opportunity. We will surely miss him.
