Area Report for Board of Trustees

As we approach commencement, We’re excited about the upcoming announcement of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award. We’ve been busy on campus, including filming spots for an upcoming ad campaign on Telemundo for Spanish Language World Cup broadcasts, and in the community attending events such as the May 11th Government to Government Summit between Tribal Leaders and Community and Technical Colleges, hosting a Sound Transit Town Hall on May 13. HC Foundation Board held their annual Legends Event for Retirees and Friends on May 7 and had their annual business meeting on May 27 where they confirmed the FY27 officers and previewed the budget. Work continues on securing outside funding for the Center for Global Business.

Core Theme 1: ACCESS, Reduce Barriers and close equity gaps to access for all community members

  • Foundation Scholarship applications for 2026-2027 academic year opened in early April through May 10. 676 applications were received and first round of review was completed by May 29, 2026.
  • Communications and Marketing has worked with Telemundo on an advertising campaign throughout the FIFA World Cup Spanish Language broadcast and related online advertising. Special thanks to Purchasing for their assistance in finalizing this contract and to student and college leaders and Trustee Chachere for participating in the special city feature. Stay tuned for links to the ads and associated material.

Core Theme 3: COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, Create a more inclusive working environment and a more valued, visible relationship with communities we serve

  • Attended Government to Government Summit at South Seattle College with Tribal Leaders and CTCs from across the state to learn ways to increase access to higher education and successful collaborations between Tribes and Colleges.
  • Hosted a Transit oriented town hall with Sound Transit, Transportation Choices and several elected officials on May 13, 2026.
  • Team members attended and volunteered at Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, Greater Federal Way Chamber/Jobs for South Sound, and Seattle Southside Chamber Board Retreat which included presentations by local city managers and economic development directors about what is happening and help needed in local cities.
  • Attended Highline Forum on 5/27 where presentations given on the Airport SAMP, which now has a 60 day window for public comment, comments can sent to samp@portseattle.org or entered online at https://sea-samp.com/get-involved/  . The Port staff took feedback from Highline Public Schools and Highline College and now makes the SAMP and similar communications available in the top languages spoken in our community and uses a translation widget to make info available.
  • Congressman Adam Smith’s office has notified Highline College that the request for support for the Center for Global Business has been included in the proposed list of community funded projects and will be in the draft budget that Congress will work on this fall.
