The Southeast Asian American Education Coalition (SEAeD), a non-profit organization where Ay Saechao serves as President, hosted the 2018 Rising Southeast Asians (SEAs) Student Conference on November 17 at UW Seattle. Over 250 high school, middle school and college students attended. The conference was funded by the Gates Foundation and Seattle Neighborhoods, and partnered with 18 community and local organizations. Special guests State Senator Joe Nguyen, State Representative Mia Gregerson, State Representative Cindy Ryu, and State Senator Bob Hasegawa served on a panel presentation, “Running for Office.”

Advising & High School Programs

In partnership with Academic Affairs, Advising sponsored Pathway Advising Days November 6 & 7. Academic and faculty advisors representing the 6 Highline Pathways assisted students in selecting classes and registering for winter quarter. Academic Advisors also offered group advising and registration sessions on November 6 & 14 to provide students with hands-on support for next steps.

On November 28, Highline hosted the biannual College Transfer Fair featuring 20 Washington (public and private) baccalaureate schools who provided information on the application process, deadlines, majors and scholarships. The Transfer Center collaborated with MESA, Honors and High School Programs to sponsor a Personal Statement Workshop, which helped 40 students write an effective essay for their university application. The students had the opportunity to hear directly from Highline President, Dr. John Mosby who shared his advice on the importance of writing a strong personal statement.

Women’s Programs/WorkFirst Services

WP/WF Director, Deana Rader serves as Chair of the Re-entry Education Transition Pathway (RETP) Task Force. Deana met with Highline College Grant Writer, Kevin Corrigan to investigate grant opportunities to develop and support a formal re-entry program for previously incarcerated students at Highline.

Counseling

On November 7, the Counseling Center offered a campus-wide Anxiety and Depression Screening event. Fifty-five participants who attended a Depression or Anxiety workshop and 24 chose to take a survey and meet with a counselor for referral.

Career & Student Employment (CASE)

The Career and Student Employment Center hosted the Fall Job Fair on October 23. The popular event brought in 58 employers from a variety of industries. Over 350 students participated and 17 interviews were offered. The next job fair is scheduled for December 5.

Athletics

Highline currently has 162 student athletes and nine sports teams. Besides competing in their sport, all student athletes carry a full academic load. In November, the Highline women’s volleyball team finished an exciting season by taking 2nd place in the NWAC Volleyball Playoffs against undefeated Spokane.
