Dec. 08, 2022: Institutional Advancement

Area Report for Board of Trustees

The Institutional Advancement division is made up of the following groups: Communications and Marketing (CM), Outreach and Recruitment (OR), Grants and Government Relations (GGR), Foundation and Alumni Relations (FAR). IA is involved in many different areas on and off Highline’s campus, ranging from promoting our College at local high schools, assisting with writing grants for key programs and raising money for student support and special projects, or skillfully crafting advertisements to placement on or in wide array of medium such as busses, billboards and movie theaters.  Institutional Advancement is there to do just that: advance our institution. Our 2022-2023 reports to the board will focus on our goals and objectives identified in Institutional Effectiveness Reports (IE). The SBDC/Startzone and COE for Global Trade and Supply Chain Management also report through IA and updates on these programs and their goals will be shared periodically.

Core Theme 1: ACCESS, Reduce barriers and close equity gaps to access for all community members

  • Grants and Foundation Office worked with Julie Pollard, director of ACHIEVE on a renewal grant from the May and Stanley Smith grant. $100,000 for 2 years was approved and funding comes through the HC Foundation. Achieve empowers adults and youth transitioning to adulthood to bridge successfully into active lives in the community by offering college certificates and real work experience.
  • Grants Office provided support for a National Science Foundation grant that has recently been awarded, $211,083, 3 years. Collaborative Research: The Math Your Earth Science Majors Need, When They Need It: Improving Quantitative Skills in The Future Earth Science Workforce. Dr. Eric Baer is the PI.
  • Outreach and Recruitment participated in College Con (11/5), and the Black and Brown Male Summit Resource Fair (11/19).
  • IA staff participated along with colleagues from SS and AA in PSCCN King County Promise Practitioners retreat on November 16 to continue the work of rolling out and implementing the Highline Promise Partnership to increase college going rates of HPS students, with focused goal of increasing enrollment and completion of BIPOC males.
  • Communications and Marketing heavily assisted in promoting the 13th annual Black and Brown Male Summit by providing website support, program materials, social media marketing, press release distribution and connection with local media to spread awareness of the summit and subsequently Highline College, which reduces barriers to access at Highline College and closes equity gaps for those in our greater Highline College community who attended the summit.

Core Theme 2: STUDENT LEARNING, Increase educational success, collaborate to improve

  • The Associated Students of Highline College (ASHC), in partnership with IA’s Government Relations team, held the annual Student Legislative Breakfast on Wednesday, November 16th. Our local legislators were able to meet with students to discuss the issues impacting our community and students. The event received positive feedback, and the Government Relations team is looking forward to bringing more local legislators to campus in the coming months.
  • Communications and Marketing collaborated with Conference and Event Services and the Hospitality and Tourism Management department on a news post about their partnership to increase awareness of the program and therefore educational success among those who enter the program.

Core Theme 3: COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, Create a more inclusive working environment and a more valued, visible relationship with communities we serve

  • The 13th Annual Black & Brown Male Summit was held on Saturday, November 19th. The event was incredibly powerful and engaging, reaching nearly 200 young men of color from across Washington State on the Highline Campus. IA’s Tanisha Williams, Scholarships and Alumni Relations Program Specialist, serves on the Summit committee with others across Campus.
  • Dave Weber, Print Shop Manager, hosted the “Serve the Vets” potluck on 11/10 in honor of Veterans Day. The potluck was a great success and allowed the campus community to come together in thanking our student and employee Veterans for their service.
  • Highline College was a pivotal partner for the Greater Federal Way Chamber of Commerce Gala at the Woodbridge Office Park (former Weyerhaeuser HQ) on 11/12 and also helped organize a meeting of educational institutional reps to meet and learn about possible uses of the facility.
  • VPIA presented HC 60th Anniversary Retrospective to Des Moines/Normandy Park Rotary on 11/4, which has led to possible new board member for HC Foundation.

Division Honors and Achievements

  • Tony Johnson and Raechel Dawson have attended the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations Regional Conference and the Public Information Council (PIC) bi-annual meeting to represent Highline College and learn latest and best practices in communications and marketing.
