Area Report for Board of Trustees
Core Theme 1 – ACCESS
- Through funding support of Guided Pathways, the Student Services Division is excited to announce the creation of the Completion Coach & Retention Manager, who will lead completion efforts for students nearing graduation but have “stopped out”. In addition, the staff in the roll will work closely with campus partners to provide targeted intervention and holistic support services for students who may be on academic or Financial Aid probation. The position is expected to filled by late October.
- With the approval of Executive Cabinet, the Financial Aid Department disbursed financial aid to students on September 19th; a week before the start of fall quarter. Traditionally we begin disbursing aid the Friday before the quarter starts. The decision to disburse funds earlier was to permit more students to have funds to acquire books and other core academic supplies prior to the start of the first week of classes.
- Mariela Barriga, Director of Student Support onboarded four new United Way Kind County Benefits Hub coaches for the 2022-2023 academic year. Additionally, one coach will participate in supporting Highline College students for a second term.
- The Counseling Center staff participated in a fall quarter retreat and identified outreach activities for the quarter. Additionally, staff made tentative goals for the rest of the 2022-2023 school year. The retreat was also used to identify leads/point of contacts in the counseling center for academic departments and campus programs to increase outreach to support of students.
- International Student programs has re-implemented Sea -Tac airport meet and greets for the first time since COVID. Air-port and dormitory greetings for our incoming fall 2022 international students residing at Campus View dormitory.
- Athletics enrolled approximately 120 student athletes for fall quarter 2022.
- Seven clubs have begun the process of becoming officially recognized. The first opportunity for full recognition will be at the first ASHC Council Meeting on October 4.
- CLS & CCIE welcomed students to campus during the first week of the quarter through ThunderWeek, with welcome tables on the first day of class, an open house of the Center, and partner programs with Career & Transfer Services and TRiO.
- CCIE will be hosting two signature weeks of educational identity-based programming this fall, with LGBTQIA+ Week in partnership with the Q Center, October 10-14, and Disability Justice Week in partnership with Access Services, October 31-November 4.
Core Theme 2 – LEARNING
- This quarter one of the Faculty Counselors Daryllyn Harris is teaching College 101 to Umoja and King County Promise students this quarter. In addition to providing support to student learning, counselors teaching on campus increases the counseling center’s visibility and is an opportunity to promote use of the counseling center for all students.
- Highline ISP has returned to in-person orientation for the Fall 2022 intake. The office has worked with both internal and external partners to provide campus resources and services for our incoming fall 2022 students. The ISP team partnered with campus service and the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) to provide an ice cream social event for students.
- ISP will have approximately 80 new students starting in fall 2022.
- College 101 commenced for all incoming student athletes. Additionally, all three fall teams have started off strong and are currently at the top of their respective divisions.
Core Theme 3 – COMMUNITY
- TRiO Talent Search implementation is underway. The Partnership Agreement with Highline Public Schools is in the process of being reviewed and finalized. Both the Director and Advisor positions have been posted and the dean plans to have the positions filled in November. Dean Saechao will serve as the Interim Director in which collaborative efforts with Running Start and faculty have already begun to recruit, enroll and serve eligible Running Start students in TRiO Talent Search.
- TRiO Student Support Services will host its Annual TRiO Kick Off Event on Wednesday, October 19th at noon. Eileen Jimemez, former TRiO SSS Director and current Dean at South Seattle will serve as the keynote speaker, addressing the event theme “Rest and Recharge”.
- Campus View dormitory is currently at full capacity this quarter. Many new and existing international and domestic students reside there. The International Student Services (ISP) Office worked in conjunction with Campus View staff to coordinate meet and greet sessions on the general move-in dates. ISP Provided gift bags for new incoming ISP Students (Food items & Water)
- CLS & CCIE trained our 20+-member Core Services Leadership Team, starting twice a week in August moving to every day in September, to prepare student employees in their leadership roles. Campus partners from Campus View, Career & Transfer Services, Achieve Peer Navigators, TRiO Ambassadors, and Outreach Services joined us for a week of our training.
- CLS welcomed Cassie Geraghty as our new Clubs Program Leadership Advisor on August 29.
