Area Report for Board of Trustees

“We must never forget that Black History is American History. The achievements of African Americans have contributed to our nation’s greatness.” – U.S. Representative Yvette Clarke of New York

In celebrating Black History Month, the above quote is my reminder that the celebrations and achievements of African American should be celebrated all year long.  I was reminded of this while enjoying and attending many of the programs during Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week, an outstanding selection of speakers and discussions asking the critical question “Democracy for Whom?”  I want to thank the entire 2021 MLK week planning committee and the Center for Cultural & Inclusive Excellence for their hard work and efforts in offering this opportunity to the Highline College community.

I also want to recognize Rashad Norris, Director of Community Engagement, and the entire Outreach team for their continued hard work especially in these very challenging COVID times.  I had the pleasure to participate in a presentation with the State Board of Directors and educators systemwide discussing enrollment challenges and how colleges are responding to statewide drops in student attendance.  Rashad provided an excellent overview of the work that our Outreach Team is providing schools and prospective students.  The presentation was quite impressive to all participating on the call.

I have had the pleasure to speak to our legislators and testify on bills and will continue this effort for the duration of the session.  I want to thank our students, staff and faculty for your input and concerns as we discuss the statewide budget and its implications for our college.  There is much work ahead of us with respect to bills and messaging and I look forward to engaging our legislators with our story and needs for our community.

My office sponsored a “Virtual Coffee with the President” event where students were able to ask questions and provide feedback on how we can improve the experiences for our students.  In addition, this was an opportunity to simply talk with our students and provide a check-in.  Numerous students participated and I look forward to continuing to create space for student voice.  We have an exceptional group of students and it is imperative that we hear from them regularly.
