Area Report for Board of Trustees
Happy December Board Members!
It just seems like yesterday, I was preparing my November report. Time flies here at Highline College. I want to highlight a few campus and community events that have occurred representing our students, staff, and faculty.
- Highline held its annual International Education Week which included numerous programs and perspectives regarding global education, service and advocacy. One of the events was a panel of international students that gave participants an intimate look at their experiences and opportunities while completing their education at Highline. Many thanks to the planning committee for their leadership in creating another quality educational experience for all.
- Our Foundation Board held its first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (EDI) workshop training, led by Kevin Baker, foundation board member. This will be a series of trainings for the Board and a rarity among foundation boards in general. The initial training was well attended and showed the commitment of our board to not just “hear” about the work needed but identify ways for them to model this work in the community. Our foundation board continues to shine and create space for our communities to speak, listen and support one another.
- I had the opportunity to participate in the statewide Black Support and Solidarity Fall Forum, where our own Rashad Norris, Director of Community Engagement was the keynote speaker. Rashad gave a powerful speech which resulted in a 2 hour community conversation with over 180 participants. Powerful, honest, raw and real – it was an amazing experience for me to listen and process. And many thanks to the strong representation of Highline staff and faculty who attended this event. Our college received many compliments from participants and reminded those who attended how much work is needed to ensure our communities are color are heard, respected, supported, and protected.
- The Presidents of Green River College, Renton Technical College and myself participated in a higher education round table panel hosted by the Kent Chamber of Commerce. Event attendees included local areas chambers of commerce (Auburn, Covington, Renton, Seattle), Boeing, Puget Sound Energy and other businesses. In addition, a number of state legislators and mayors attended. College presidents presented a “30,000 foot view” of the CTC system focusing on trends, training and barriers with a focus on the upcoming Legislative Budget session. The event also provided opportunities in breakout rooms for strategy planning and opportunities for discussion from businesses and colleges.
Great opportunities to conclude a challenging year unlike any other. I want to provide my sincere thanks and support to our Board of Trustees, students, staff and faculty for their dedication, leadership and commitment to our communities to comprise Highline College. I wish everyone a safe and restful December as we close out 2020 and look toward a brighter new year.
