Area Report for Board of Trustees

I had my report completed late last week but decided after recent events, I decided to write another one. I want to first thank our Trustees for your continued support of Highline College and our commitment to excellence and leading through racial equity for our students, staff, and faculty. I also want to share that members of our community are struggling. The past few months adjusting to a “new normal” due to the pandemic seems like years ago compared to our next “new normal” – a country that is clearly divided, angry, frustrated, and tired. Regardless of one’s perspective, this is our reality.

I have received numerous messages, texts, letters from students, staff and faculty expressing sorrow, concern and struggling to find words to say. I have encouraged our campus to remain honest and graceful in our actions, comments, and conversations with one another. There is no “perfect” response to give but more of a personal ask of what is your commitment to this much needed work to not only acknowledge systemic racism and inequality but how can you create change moving forward.

At the same time, I know there are varying opinions about what I have mentioned above and for some individuals, they believe no problems exist. My hope is that space can be created to listen, discuss, and not just believe the stereotypes and assumptions that dictate how people feel and act – true healthy, fair conversations can exist.

As Trustees, I am asking you to advocate to erase these injustices with your fellow Trustees locally and nationally. For example, our institution is extremely fortunate to have Trustee Altmayer’s voice on a national stage with ACCT and look forward to his continued support for our entire campus community. Your presence in our community is so valued and needed more than ever as we enter an unprecedented time and unclear future.

As President, I continue to stand with the campus to lead and serve our community, accepting the beauty and challenges of being the most diverse college in Washington. This call to action requires innovation, difficult conversations and a deep understanding and commitment to hearing the amazing voices that represent our wonderful institution.

On behalf of Highline College, thank you for modeling leadership and advocacy for our college and system.
