Area Report for Board of Trustees

I wanted to highlight some wonderful events at Highline College during the past few weeks. First, on a very rainy day, Highline had the ribbon cutting for Building 26. It was a well-attended event consisting of students, staff, faculty and state legislators. After the program, tours were provided showcasing the wonderful classrooms, labs, offices and spacious student spaces throughout the building. Many thanks to the Institutional Advancement team for organizing an exciting and historical moment for the college. A special thank you to Trustee Bob Roegner for attending and participating in the ribbon cutting ceremony. This building will greatly benefit our entire institution but most importantly, providing exceptional services and instruction to our students.

On February 6, my office hosted the “Presidents’ Winter Town Hall,” a new event held quarterly that brings the entire campus together to receive updates, ask questions, hear presentations from various programs and services and discuss various topics with one another. The town hall was well attended, not an empty seat in building 2 and was televised for those unable to attend. Prior to the event, there was a request to send any questions electronically so they would be answered at the town hall. There were a number of questions submitted and provided rich discussion between attendees. Many thanks to Heather McBreen in Administrative Services, Amy Snydar and Danielle Slota in the President’s office for their assistance in making the Town Hall a successful event. The next town hall will be in May with more information to come out later this quarter.

Currently, I’m in Washington D.C. with Josh Gerstman, Shakira Ericksen and Trustees Dan Altmayer, Fred Mendoza and Sharmila Swenson attending 2020 Association of Community College (ACCT) National Legislative Summit. Many colleges and trustees from the CTC system are represented here attending workshops and spending much of our days visiting legislators advocating for our colleges and students. I’m proud to say Highline College received many compliments and praise during our visits, recognizing the hard work provided by our students, staff and faculty every day. Thank you to our Trustees for attending and advocating for our college. And a special thank you to Josh and Shakira for organizing this busy but extremely important annual trip.

Upcoming events include our system wide Transforming Lives banquet and additional updates on the great guided pathways work our institutional continues to build for our future.
