Declining enrollment is catching up with us and starting to have negative implications
Comments from Trustees:
Request from Trustee Exstrom to have a study session specifically to discuss the strategic plan as it relates to enrollment challenges. Trustees would benefit in understanding more about the long term plan and what we are doing to address falling enrollment.
Campus View, Josh Gerstman and Dr. Michael Pham (45 min for presentation and Q&A)
During COVID, due to restrictions, housing capacity had to be reduced as you had to offer private bathrooms. Bldg owner allowed a 50% rent deferment on the overall bldg rent with remaining funds due in June 2023. Currently owe ~$500k for the deferment.
Questions regarding Sound Transit’s commitment, VP Gerstman commented that they are aware the building exists and that there continue to be conversations about safety but there are not yet any firm commitments to specifics.
Discussion of Resolution 175-2022 pertaining to new core themes to be voted on in General Session, Dr. Emily Lardner and Lisa Bernhagen (30 min for presentation and Q&A)

- Associated Students of Highline College, Mahad Dahir
ASHC Vice President confirmed this last week. Student leader of the month is Angela Martin, five other other students were recognized as well. Angela will receive a $100 scholarship and certificate. Legislative Breakfast will be hosted in person on Nov. 16, 2022. Trustees and EC are encouraged to attend. Disability Justice Week continues with presentations in building 7.

Nov. 3rd is the first day of registration for winter quarter classes. Aviso is already proving useful in tracking and advising faculty student advisees. BAS programs have recently been highlighted in the Seattle Times. Faculty busy teaching, advising, developing programs, etc. The college hosted fall professional development day which brought broad participation. Thanked Dr. Lardners and Pham for their facilitation and the PD Day Committee, as well as those that lead sessions. Faculty Dept Coordinators are busy supporting adjunct faculty and positioning new hires through successful onboarding.

Expressed gratitude to the family of past faculty Frank Albin for contributing a large donation to a scholarship here at HC. Retired faculty and staff are about to receive their first newsletter in the coming weeks. Looking to fill the position for Director of Philanthropy

56% of courses fall quarter had an in-person component. All of Academic Affairs focused on teaching and program improvement. Deans meeting currently tracking their goals as they align with the MFR. Dean Justin Dampeer attended and presented at a recent HBCU Conference on Community Colleges & Highline College as a Viable Career Option. Recommended a future conversation with Dean Dampeer regarding his experience. Recognized Jenni Sandler for her work creating materials for faculty to support in creating more accessibility coursework and related materials for students. Congratulated Coral the Octopus on their graduation!

Announced upcoming agreement with BlueIcon to support financial aid file review. Spoke to Dean Dampeer’s upcoming training for Advisors and Navigators to increase and improve student communication. 2023 Student Conduct and CARE Conference, Ay Saechao, Izzry Wrobleski, and Dabid Menke will be presenting.

Recognized Hmong New Year. Made mention of the upcoming Legislative Breakfast and thanked Mahad Hamir and Shakira Ericksen. Thanked members from Academic Affairs for their representation at the upcoming Para Los Ninos event. Congratulated Rickitia Reid and Dra. Paulette Lopez for the Prof Tech celebration. Recognized Juli Hammond for speaking at the event and sharing her story. Expressed gratitude to the Foundation board for their commitment to their role and the level of commitment they continue to demonstrate.

President’s remarks, Dr. John R. Mosby
Welcomed Vise Leiato as the new Executive Assistant for the Office of the President. Recognized Heather McBreen for her service the past two years as the Interim EA and her support with scheduling and reimbursements. Announced the recruitment of the Vice President for Equity, Inclusion, and Transformation chaired by Dr. Diego Luna. The committee will be officially charged next week and the recruitment will open. Provided an update on the Student Success Council and recognized student representation through NurmaBi NoorKhan. Shared that Highline was recognized for its strong attendance at the recent Faculty Staff of Color Conference in Pasco, WA.
