Area Report for Board of Trustees
Core Theme 1: ACCESS, Reduce barriers and close equity gaps to access for all community members
- As reported last month, Public Safety has begun the distribution of a fully subsidized ORCA pass to all credited and ESOL students. The program is funded by a state proviso and allows the users to ride public transit and link light rail free of charge. As of September 30th (3rd day of Fall Quarter), we have distributed over 500 cards to eligible students. While the program does not cover international students, the College has also rolled out a separate program to subsidize up to $100 per quarter for these students, using funds from the Safety Management Fee.
Core Theme 2: STUDENT LEARNING, Increase educational success, collaborate to improve
- I have been working with our new Global Business Education Center to develop a new short-term study abroad program for 2027. The program will be offered as a two-credit course, including an 8-day trip overseas, through Continuing Education. Currently, we are planning for a Winter 2027 course to Vietnam, a Spring 2027 course to Japan, and a Summer 2027 course to Vietnam.
Core Theme 3: COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, Create a more inclusive working environment and a more valued, visible relationship with communities we serve
- In collaboration with Mr. Sam Alkhalili, Business Faculty, and Mr. Ahmed Fahad, ELCAP Faculty, Global Programs is planning our very first Faculty Experiential Learning to Egypt program for March 2027. The program will include institutional visits to New Cairo Technological University and Egyptian Academics – Tanta. In addition, faculty participants will have the opportunity to experience various cultural heritage sites, including the pyramids and the famed Grand Egyptian Museum.
- Back by popular demand, Global Programs is also offering the Faculty Experiential Learning to Vietnam, currently being planned for the end of March 2027. Mr. Khoi-Nguyen Nguyen, Math Faculty, will serve as the lead for this program.
Core Theme 4: CULTURE & CAPACITY, Promote a campus culture which fosters equity and inclusivity supporting employee growth and development, and institutional capacity and transformation
- Public Safety Officers attended a defensive tactics training hosted by Raider Tactical LLC. The training provided hands on in defensive tactics, handcuffing, expandable baton and pepper spray. The continued training gives the officers an array of tools to assist in maintaining a safe learning environment for students and employees.
- Public Safety, in coordination with the Facilities Department, paved and restriped the North Parking Lot, using funds collected from the Safety Management Fee. As part of the project, 11 new cameras will be installed to provide additional safety monitoring of students and employees using the parking lot.
- Our Facilities staff have been extremely busy with numerous summer projects. Building 10 interior upgrades, with new painting, new carpeting, and new classroom furniture, have been completed. ITS has also been involved with upgrading classroom IT/AV equipment. Outdoor landscaping projects, including installation of irrigation systems, are still on going, but expected to be completed by the end of October.
Division Honors & Achievements
- It is my great pleasure to announce the hiring of Mohammed Parwani as our weekend maintenance custodian position. This is one of our essential positions for the weekend coverage, but also more difficult to fill.
