June 11, 2020: Administrative Services

Area Report for Administrative Services

Vice President for Administration

  • As the academic year draws to a close, this is supposed to be the time for our college community to come together to celebrate the success of our student graduates. Unfortunately, many of us are currently saddled with frustration and anger over the events of the past several weeks. I am in particular outraged at the continued killing of black individuals by police.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic along with other contributing factors is negatively impacting our college finances. Dr. Mosby and I co-hosted an all-campus town hall budget forum on May 14, 2020, with over 200 employees in participation. We discussed the revised fiscal year budget as well as other potential budget challenges facing the college.
  • The Budget Advisory Council met for our introductory meeting on June 3, 2020. The Council is comprised of representative employees from all of our major employee groups on campus, including the HCEA, WPEA, and the Faculty Senate.
  • It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Nicki Bly as Highline College new COVID-19 supervisor. Her appointment will be effective July 1, 2020. Nicki is currently serving as Program Director for our Respiratory Care program.

Facilities

  • The new digital fire alarm system project has been successfully completed.
  • Facilities teams (Custodial, Maintenance, and Central Services) have continued to provide a presence on campus, as essential personnel, to support critical operations of the college.

Finance & Budget

  • We have drawn/received our first CARES Act funds on May 28th for a total of $233,400.99. This amount includes reimbursement for student aid distribution as well as reimbursement for equipment and supply costs incurred due to COVID responses.
  • Finance has successfully completed CTClink training sessions and homework activities.
  • As June arrives everyone in Finance is busy working on year-end activities as they prepare for a smooth close to the fiscal year.

Public Safety and Emergency Management

  • Public Safety, in coordination with The Office of the President, held a Town Hall meeting on May 26, 2020. The Town Hall served as an opportunity for Dr. Mosby and Incident Command System to share updates and answer questions regarding the future plans surrounding COVID-19. The town hall was attended by 215 employees of Highline College. Attendees were able to participate in a Q&A regarding the phased return of normal services plan.
  • On May 19, 2020, Incident Command System (ICS), in collaboration with the COVID-19 Supervisor, Nicki Bly, was able to meet the requirements for Phase 1 Higher Education. Highline College was able to resume the Certified Nursing Assistant, Respiratory Care and Nursing Assistant programs for face to face labs.

Auxiliary Services

  • The Bookstore has expanded its online services to include; online buyback, rental return shipping, graduation gowns and a new category, Face Masks.
  • Graduation caps & gowns are being shipped to student graduates beginning in the last week of May.
  • The Bookstore eagerly awaits the first shipment of reusable (cloth) face masks, to be distributed to staff and faculty, in our phased return to on-campus operations.
