Jun. 10, 2021: Administrative Services

Area Report for Board of Trustees

Vice President for Administration

  • The preliminary Fiscal Year Budget 2021-22 is being provided to the Board for review. The College will be requesting for a formal adoption of the budget later during the summer/early fall.
  • In order to ensure our continuing operations beyond June 30, 2021, the College is requesting the Board to approve a continuing resolution to expend funds at the current level until the Board formally adopts the FY2021-22 budget.
  • As part of our continuing mission to integrate globalism and internationalization at Highline College, Jenn Ritchey, Sam Kaplan, Shawna Freeman, and I hosted a virtual/online workshop on May 20th with the faculty and students of Foreign Trade University from Vietnam. The topics of the workshop focused on global trade and supply chain management.  Students from our own BAS Global Trade program had the opportunity to engage in interactive discussions with faculty and students from Vietnam.
  • After a three-year commitment for leadership roles in our statewide commission, I will be stepping down as chair of the Business Affairs Commission at the end of June 2021.
  • As we wrap up another year under COVID, I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to all of the employees within Administrative Services (Finance, Budget, Public Safety, Facilities, and Auxiliary Services). Due to the nature of their work, most Administrative Services employees have been working in-person on campus throughout the pandemic.  They have truly been the backbone of this institution.

Facilities

  • Facilities has begun preparation for the bi-annual Facilities Condition Survey conducted by the State Board. The survey identifies the state of our facilities, including any deficiencies, to develop a capital plan with potential repair and improvement funding in the next biennium.
  • Discussions have begun with McGranahan Architects to update Campus Master Plan in preparation for the new Welcome Center for Student Success.
  • The Custodial Team continues to do a fantastic job implementing daily, detailed cleaning and disinfecting schedule.

Finance

  • As we are continuing to make progress in learning the new PeopleSoft system, the Finance team is gearing up for our first year-end and year-close in the new ctcLink system.
  • As mentioned earlier, Cathy Cartwright, our current Finance Director, will be transitioning to a tenured faculty position in September. We are in the process of recruiting for her replacement.  The screening committee is working on reviewing the applications as of May 23rd.
  • We are also in the process of recruiting for a principal accountant. However, after the final round of interviewing the two finalists, we have decided to delay the hiring until the selection of a Finance Director.
  • Budget is developing a flexible model to facilitate the budgeting process at the department level with various funding sources and fluctuating expenditures.

Public Safety and Emergency Management

  • The Public Safety office is pleased to announce a second pop-up vaccine clinic on campus on May 25th from 9AM to 11:30AM. This clinic, in partnership with Genoa Healthcare, provides free COVID vaccine to Highline College students and employees, on both appointment and walk-in basis.
  • After over six months of providing COVID testing on our South Parking Lot, King County Public Health will be winding down the test site on Highline College campus at the end of May, due to declining demand and our summer parking lot repaving project, among the various factors. We are very grateful to King County Public Health to provide the much-needed service to our community during the worst of the pandemic.

Public Safety and Emergency Management

  • The Bookstore is in the process of transitioning to the new MBS point-of-sale system. The new MBS system will streamline the processes currently in place at the bookstore and provide students with a better website experience beginning Fall Quarter 2021.
  • The Bookstore is working closely with The Center for Leadership Services to organize commencement regalia and diploma pickup for students.
