Approve minutes of the regularly scheduled meeting of April 11, 2024

Trustee Swenson motioned to approve, Trustee Bowman seconded. Motion passed unanimously.

Student Benjamin Stanton provided an invitation to the Board for the upcoming ACHIEVE capstone celebration

Standing reports

  • Associated Students of Highline College – Devo Young

Student commencement speaker selection is currently underway. Currently focused on supporting commencement. T-Birds at T-Mobile is coming up as well as story hour at the library focused on students with children.

  • Highline College Education Association – Dr. James Peyton

Provided updates on the current status of faculty on campus. HCEA is currently hearing a lot about generative AI. Assessing student learning continues to be a challenge with this topic. The Spring equity development institute was appreciated by faculty. Dra. Jimenez and the equity task force did a great job. Upcoming retirements will be celebrated during spring quarter. Thank you to the ITS team for the effort they have placed on tech tool selection for faculty. 

Trustee Swenson noted that it would be helpful for the trustees to learn more about the challenges our campus is facing with generative AI so that they can support the conversation at the national level.

  • Faculty Senate – Sangeeta Sangha

Senate will vote soon on an update to the first week non-attendance policy, specifically related to asynchronous courses. If it passes the policy will be sent to the Policy Development Council. In response to a faculty member’s concern about the student tech fee, who pays, and what it pays for, the decision was made that the current process makes place. Currently looking at onboarding practices at the request of another faculty member. Additionally they are working to better understand how the senate fits into other areas of campus and also working to fill vacant senate seats on various campus community committees.

  • Highline College Foundation – Sharron Vail

Highline College Legends event was a great success. Travel experiences shared that day from the recent Vietnam trip was well received. We currently have 550 students that have submitted for foundation aid applications. The Foundation Board is currently planning their spring retreat. Save the date for Thunderbird Soars on November 2nd.

Area reports

  • Administrative Services: VP Dr. Michael Pham

After two failed solicitations for food service in building 8, Highline has identified and selected a vendor. Terms are currently being negotiated for food services in the fall.

  • Academic Affairs: VP Dr. Emily Lardner

Spoke to the upcoming Native Success Summit as well as the work being done around academic integrity as it relates to Generative AI. Moving into the graduation season and excited for the many events coming this spring. Spoke to partnership with Catholic Community Services on addressing housing and homeless challenges. 

  • Student Services: VP Dr. Jamilyn Penn

Spoke to the academic standards policy subcommittee which is developing a new policy to replace the provisional policy currently in place. They are currently focused on collecting feedback from the community on how to best focus this policy as a wrap-around support service that we can offer students.

  • Institutional Advancement: VP Josh Gerstman

Celebrated Dra. Jimenez and Dr. Penn for their recent accomplishments. More details can be read about at https://www.highline.edu/category/news/. Spoke to current conversations regarding the Soundside Alliance and developing relationships through community and connection.

Trustee Bowman asked for an update on the HUB. VP Gerstman spoke to it’s great success and the staple service it has become within the City of Federal Way. The community is benefiting as well as they bring programming to the site and get exposure to the Highline community. The HUB is being intentional about attending local events and making themselves present and available. Dr. Penn’s office continues to encourage participation within campus meetings to build connection with our offsite employees.

  • Equity, Diversity and Transformation: VP Dra. Maribel Jimenez

In the process of collecting survey feedback from the 2024 Equity Development Day. The Students of Color Conference returned as an in person conference for its 35th year. Celebrated Highline’s presence at the conference.
