Attendees: Tim Wrye, Aaron Reader, Michael Pham, John Mosby, Josh Gerstman, Summer Korst, Bruce Marvin, Bob Roegner, Fred Mendoza, Dan Altmayer, Amy Snydar, Emily Lardner, James Peyton, Sili Savusa, Sharmila Swenson

Chair Mendoza

  • Discussion of open meetings act amid the climate of zoom meetings.

President Mosby 

  • Introduction of new VP of Student Services, Aaron Reader

VP, Michael Pham 

  • No action will be taken on budget at today’s General Session
  • Shared desktop of Revenue budget revision for discussion
  • Declining revenue
  • 4/10/20 the numbers will be more concrete for 3 quarter
  • State Allocation expect no change
  • Tuition is projected to have shortfall
  • Running Start projected to have a shortfall
  • ISP projected to get worse and have a significant shortfall
  • Grants and Contracts are projected to exceed our original budget
  • Student Fees is project to have shortfall – moving instruction on line has impacted
  • Extended Learning will have a smaller shortfall
  • Does not include loss opportunity
  • Bookstore shortfall
  • Parking and transportation shortfall
  • Food service shortfall
  • Auxiliary Enterprises shortfall
  • Purchases for technology for students to succeed in online environment – goods and Services
  • budget can be put towards that
  • Travel ban is saving Highline College money
  • Some local funds had been put to facilities causes, some of which can be redirected if needed (worst case scenario)
  • Federal Stimulus package may have potential money for student support

Chair Mendoza: Inquired if VP Pham would bring a revised budget in May.  VP Pham indicated he would with a few changes.

President Mosby 

  • Discusses the changes of the past six weeks with unprecedented circumstances.
  • The college suspended instruction by one week to put courses on line and strategize how to do the others.
  • Student Services and Academic Affairs are in uncharted territories, with Instruction Design teams, faculty and staff. Students are hearing from them. 
  • Trying to make sure they have the tools for them to do the work. 
  • Many thanks to Tim and his team! 
  • The challenge is that all areas of education, students that don’t have computers, internet or hotspots. 
  • The Student Technology survey provided very useful information.  
  • President Mosby reports on FTEs
  • Virtual president town hall in collaboration with ASHC and later with Faculty and Staff
  • Each month for the remainder of the year.
  • In terms of summer quarter, there will be more to discuss at the college’s executive cabinet meeting to find what that might look like. 
  • Not ready to discuss fall
  • Campus has done amazing job to a new normal. 
  • Executive Director of HR, Summer Korst deserves many thanks, shifting to the telework format, exceptional job in providing information to the community
  • There is going to cause a future shift “back” to what ever the new normal will be and may see an increase in counseling
  • VP Gerstman has done a great job in communication and updating our web presence
  • VP Pham has done some wonderful and careful work. I feel that we are doing really well.
  • Commencement Committee will make and recommendation to cabinet soon
  • All and all we are doing very well. Campus has done an admirable job. The pantry is closed at the moment, but if people have needs they’ve been covered by some community resources.
  • email ask@highline.edu goes out on all our communications. Thanks to Amy Snydar for responding to those messages. Great way to learn how to help out.

VP Institutional Advancement – Josh Gerstman 

  • Reports on a highlines cares campaign.  Which contacts every student via email/phone etc. To check in and answer questions.

 VP Student Services – Aaron Reader

  • Women’s program is doing everything virtually and have offering services online.
  • Chair Mendoza initiated a conversation around anticipate grad loss rate
  • The College would expect a little bit of a drop, in part due to high touch students. 

ITS Executive Director – Tim Wrye

  • Recognized David Menke and Francesca Fender in Public Safety for the great job of supporting the cross campus.

VP Gerstman

  • Discussed how the college wants to be active and visible. To this end, a mini campaign online with staff and faculty on how the college have been handling the response. The more likes on the social media posts the more it raises visibility.

Dr. James Peyton Discussed the emotional health of faculty: scrambling to keep up week to week. FT PT spent a lot of energy to switch formats. Dealing with coping with issues such as: where you do you find the right space in your home? How do you find a quiet space for office hours? How do I homeschool my children with a job that now takes more time to do? Messaging from institution has been positive in hey we can help you. We can still do quality education; it just looks different.

Trustee Savusa recommended an actual video in different languages, of caring and healing messages in social media. 

Interim VP Academic Affairs – Emily Lardner

  • Faculty has put in such hard work, and we can never say thank you enough for their efforts. 

Human Resource Executive Director – Summer Korst   

  • The college has really rallied. HR is doing everything it can to keep all employees in pay status. 
  • There have been adjustments in our policy to remain flexible for our workforce. The college is reviewing the policies and asking if we need so much bureaucracy in those policies?

Roll call: Trustees Mendoza, Savusa, Altmayer, Swenson and Roegner.  VPs Pham, Lardner, Reader and Gerstman, President Mosby, AAG Marvin and Secretary Amy Snydar. Executive Directors Korst and Wrye.

Chair Mendoza notes that the meeting is restricted to essential business, and will be a short meeting.

Associated Students of Highline College: Mohamed Jama

  • Reports on ASHC is connected with students through email and social media. Mentions a survey on restructure of student government and that this information has been forwarded to Chair Mendoza and President Mosby for further discussion and consideration.
  • Shared his thanks for everyone for the precautions for ensuring for the health and well being on our campus community

Washington Public Employees Association: Tessa Bowen

  • Sincere thanks to the custodial staff for cleaning our campus and helping and to ITS for getting the tech into hands of students and staff, as well as our public safety officers ensuring everyone is safe.

Highline College Education Association: Dr. James Peyton

  • Reports on the challenges in the current environment for faculty. The existing relation has been so important find the new. Started instruction this Monday. Looking for ways of supporting students with academic standards intact.
  • Instructional Design have been phenomenal. Many thanks to Marc Lentini, Avery Viehmann, Teresa Matsumoto-Maxfield, Sue Frantz, and others.
  • Highline one specific effort. Adjunct has been trained in canvas and zoom. ABL trained dozens. The functions of the college are still happening.
