Discussion Topics

Review proposed changes to the Senate Constitution for action in March (15 min)

Dr. Mosby confirmed that he is comfortable with the suggested change that senate constitution changes come to the President in place of the board in the future. Discussion that this also seems more in alignment with how other institutions are overseeing this document.

The board is asking that additional redlines be presented to the trustees individually for review in advance of the March meeting as to not delay the March vote. Dr. Lardner will take point on conversations with Bruce

Student fees & Parking fee proposal for 2024-25 for action in March (30 min)

Trustee Swenson motioned to approve, Trustee Bowman seconded. Motion passed unanimously.

  • Associated Students of Highline College – Devoni Young

Upcoming basketball game on Saturday, double header with Lower Columbia. ASHC supporting the teams with a free throw challenge during half times. Student Council has agreed to amend the constitution and bylaws with a change from election to selection for student leaders due to low participation. It will be an application and interview process. On January 25, ASHC students went to Olympia to advocate for reduced textbook costs.

  • Highline College Education Association – Dr. James Peyton

Recognized faculty being granted tenure today. Faculty in the midst of midterms as well as spring quarter planning. Enrollments continue to approve. Tenure review committees are busy with classroom evaluation. Faculty busy advising students through many modalities. Currently participating in campus event planning including Equity Diversity Institute, Green Week, and other. College catalog revision deadline is in early March. Thanks Institutional Advancement for the recent legislative district town hall. Union continues to monitor what is happening with the legislature. Three different memorandums of agreement currently being worked on with Highline administration.

Celebrated the Connel family who recently made a very generous donation to the college creating student scholarships that have thus far benefited 51 students creating access to education. Presented information on the 2024-25 signature event, and announced a save the date for November 2, 2024.

Congratulated the tenure recipients, highlighting Cathy Cartwright for her journey from Highline College staff to Highline College tenured faculty.

  • Academic Affairs: VP Dr. Emily Lardner

Celebrated the individuals that were granted tenure today. Celebrated all involved. Also recognized Susan Landgraff, Highline College Foundation member and retired faculty, for the recent poetry writing workshop she hosted as part of the 2023-24 foundation signature fundraising event.

  • Student Services: VP Dr. Jamilyn Penn

Over 250 community members attended town hall at last weeks event. Recognized the Connel family for their recent gift and thanks Tanisha Williams for the work she did to put on the campus event. Highlighted the upcoming Y.E.L.L. Summit scheduled for Saturday, May 18.

  • Equity, Diversity and Transformation: VP Dra. Maribel Jimenez

Expressed gratitude to Highline for their support around diversity, equity and inclusion particularly within the current political landscape. Trustee Swenson seconded these comments and encouraged trustees to lift up these conversations in their other circles.

President’s remarks

Celebrated the hard work that goes behind receiving tenure both by the candidate and the working committees that support and review the files throughout the entire process. Spoke to the challenges within equity, diversity and inclusion at the national level and the local level. Reaffirmed Highline’s commitment to continuing to learn, challenge and lean in.
