Area report for Board of Trustees

Vice President for Administration

  • Due to some unexpected retirement in the Business Affairs Commission (state-level), I was asked to resume another leadership role. I will be serving as BAC Capital Liaison at WACTC for the remainder of the current FY2021-22.
  • As part of the next capital project submission process at the State Board, I will also be serving as one of the capital project scorers for the system.
  • The 2nd quarter financial report (2021-22) is being submitted for the Board to review. The 2nd quarter financial report is typically used as basis (the starting point) for our budget planning for the upcoming fiscal year.
  • I along with our Global Programs team met with our counterparts from Tacoma Community College, Wenatchee Valley College, and North Seattle College to discuss various options for the upcoming Study Abroad program. The Follow-the-Supply-Chain Study Abroad program is a joint four-college program that has been delayed for the last two years due to the COVID pandemic.  We are hoping to bring together a trip this year to Vietnam in September 2022.

Facilities

  • Facilities has submitted the program maintenance capital fund request to the State Board for the 2023-25 biennium.
  • Facilities is continuing with the process to update our Campus Master Plan 2030. We are targeting to complete the process in Spring 2022.

Finance & Budget

  • The department filled the general ledger accountant and fiscal analyst positions, but still has a vacancy for the accounting manager position. The staff turnover continues to challenge the department.
  • WA State Auditor’s Office is expected to begin the financial statement audit the College’s FY2021 financial statements in February 2022.

Public Safety and Emergency Management

  • In partnership with UW Medicine, the COVID testing site on campus will provide priority testing to Highline College employees and students on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Public Safety coordinated with COCM/Campus View LLC to install a service window connecting the Public Safety substation to the residence hall lobby. This allows Public Safety to be more connected with student residents and promote safety services such as escorts to vehicles and campus.

International Student Programs

  • ISP is pleased to announce a foreign university partnership with Daekyeung University of Daegu, Korea. The partnership could potentially allow direct enrollment and exchanges of Daekyeung students to Highline College.
  • ISP has also submitted a proposal to the Papuan (Indonesian) government for enrolling Papuan students in Highline’s BAS programs. We have had an ongoing and productive relationship with the Papuan government for the last 18 months.  This new proposal hopes to expand upon this relationship for both in-person and (in-country) online enrollments.
  • ISP is also planning to launch another calling care campaign. The campaign is meant to be a general welfare check on our current students here in the U.S. to see how they are doing and answer questions.

Global Programs

  • A new global virtual exchange program is just getting started for winter quarter. Through the Global Studies course, fourteen Highline College students will work together on a sustainable development project with engineering students from Salahaddin University in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
  • The two committees that focus on strategic planning for global initiatives kicked off the year with a SWOT Analysis. This SWOT Analysis will help drive creation of the Strategic Plan for the next 3-year cycle with global initiatives.

Auxiliary Services

  • The Fireside Bistro is open for business serving espresso/coffee, sandwiches, hot soups, and a variety of salads. As the only food-service outlet on campus, the Fireside Bistro provides an essential service for our employees and students, as the college slowly returns to on-campus operations of working and learning.
  • The Bookstore is providing a free 60th Anniversary t-shirt to all employees (while supplies last).
